3rd Book: Wayyiqra (Leviticus)
The third book of Mosheh is titled in Hebrew ‘Wayyiqra’, meaning “and he called”. Yahudi (Jewish) historical documents refer to this book as the “Torah of the Priests” and the “Torah of the Offerings”. The Greek title in the Septuagint is ‘Leuitikon’, which means ‘that which pertains to the Lewites’. From this, the Latin Vulgate derived the name ‘Leviticus’. This title is misleading because the book pertains not only to the Lewites, but most specifically the Kohenim (priests), which are a group within the Lewites.
Wayyiqra deals with the concept of being Qodesh, meaning set-apart, pure and sanctified. To be Qodesh is a way of life, therefore Wayyqira explains how to worship, obey and serve YaHuWaH. Wayyiqra deals with laws of purity of cleanliness vs. the profane and unclean. There are outlines that pertain exclusively to the priests, some pertain exclusively to males, females, but ultimately it is a guide for Israel (Yashra’el) dealing with all aspects of life. “You shall be Qodesh, for I YaHuWaH your Elohim am Qodesh” (Wayyiqra 19:2).
