Shemoth Highlights

2nd Book: Shemoth (Exodus)

The second book of Mosheh is titled in Hebrew “Shemoth”, meaning names and comes from the first phrase, “w’elleh shemoth” (‘and these are the names’). The Greek title given to this book is “Exodus”, a word meaning ‘to exit’, ‘depart’, or ‘go out’. The Septuagint used this word to describe the central theme of this scroll, which is the mass departure of the children of Israel from Egypt.

Shemoth covers the enslavement of the chosen people, the rise of the prophet Mosheh, his encounter with YHWH at the burning bush, the ten plagues, the Passover, the Red Sea crossing and much more.
